Listener
Support
A new age is dawning in the
music industry and it is both a scary and exciting time to
be an artist. No one really knows what the future holds, but
one thing is certain: the attention and direct support of
fans matters more now than it ever has before. Between CD
Baby, iTunes, MySpace and Facebook, it's easy to be overwhelmed
with music. We are truly honored for all the time and attention
you, our fans, have given us.
We are very proud of the music
we write. What is most exciting is that the majority of material
we have written has yet to be released. So for all the fans
who are not able to attend a live performance (international
fans), there is a lot of Concrete Prophet music written that
we can not get to you just yet.
Our plan is to enter the studio
towards the end of this year with the goal of recording a
full-length album to be released in 2009. Concrete Prophet
is currently 100% independent of any outside agency which
means we live and die by our fans.
Clicking the button below and
making a donation is the most direct way to show your support
and help us share this music with you. As a "Thank You"
for your contribution, you'll receive:
- A "thank you"
spoken aloud on our next studio recording
- Your name and photograph on our website
- a free song download from the next release
We're excited to march forward
in the coming months to create something of which we will
all be proud.
Best Wishes,
Concrete Prophet
Afterword by Brian Dobbs
We have thought a lot about
what it means to achieve success, and the ramifications that
"success" would have on us as a group, our friends,
and fans. There was a time when it was clear that "success"
was marked by record company representation. And certainly
for some, it still is. But we wonder, is that right for us?
Writing, recording and performing music is our passion, but
in these modern times the "music industry" as we
traditionally have known it is a completely different animal.
Take this as an example. In an email to CD Baby members, owner
Derek Sivers said, "As of the last few years, now 90%
of your career is up to you. YOU have to make a great recording,
a great show, a great image. YOU have to make things happen
on your own."
So we think there appears to be a misconception as to what
benefits record companies offer for unsigned artists. We recognize
their ability to provide exposure beyond what any unsigned
artist can normally achieve for themselves, but at what cost?
The money spent by record companies on producing, distributing,
and marketing their artists is all recoupable from future
album sales. Even artist advances are recoupable, with interest!
Sivers added later in his email,
"If you need more money, get it from anyone except a
record company." In other words, artists should be in
control of how their money is spent, not record companies.
And you know what? Accomplished musicians seem to agree.
In May 2008 Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater said, "A lot
of bands immediately want to get in bed with a record label
and sign away their lives. At this point in 2008 you couldn't
make a bigger mistake."
Trent Reznor from Nine Inch
Nails adds, "If you do put out a record on a label, most
people are going to hear it via a leak that happens before
it comes out. There’s no real way around that. How long
before [record companies] are irrelevant? They seem to be
doing everything they can to make sure that happens as quickly
as possible."
That brings us to you, the
fans. We know you want more music from us, and we have a ton
of it to share! It just comes down to support. We simply seek
the ability to sustain a career making music for you!
